Tesla is recalling Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles due to misaligned front cameras

Tesla is recalling 1,337 2023 Model S, Model X, and Model Y vehicles to repair misaligned cameras that may cause forward collision avoidance and other semi-autonomous technologies to fail unexpectedly. Tesla's partially automatic drive software is dependent on external cameras to function successfully, rather than the more common use of radar/lidar for redundant safety. A misplaced camera can render Tesla's systems completely inoperable.

Tesla has recalled certain Model S, Model X, and Model Y electric vehicles due to misaligned front cameras. A total of 1,377 Tesla vehicles have been recalled. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has indicated that the pitch angle of the front-facing camera in the concerned vehicles may not be by requirements. This misalignment may cause active safety measures to be unavailable without warning the driver.

Tesla vehicles rely significantly on cameras and sensors for their safety measures.

The NHTSA claimed in its recall document that safety-focused functions such as automatic emergency braking, front collision warning, and lane-keeping assist could be malfunctioning due to the front-facing camera's wrong pitch angle. This may cause the driver to rely on unavailable features, increasing the danger of a crash.

According to the recall document, the fault is believed to be present in 80% of the recalled Tesla electric vehicles. Tesla Model S vehicles were built between January 24 and July 10, this year, while Model X vehicles were built between January 17 and July 1, and Model Y vehicles were built between April 27 and July 13.

Tesla uncovered 83 warranty claims and two field reports that may be related to the issue that prompted the recall of the vehicles. Tesla, on the other hand, has stated that it is not aware of any collisions, injuries, or deaths connected to the issue. The manufacturer's authorized service workshops will check the pitch angle of the forward-facing cameras in concerned vehicles and, if necessary, correct the angle to specification.

This is not the first vehicle recall issued by Tesla this year. Earlier in 2023, the EV company recalled 137 Model Y vehicles because their steering wheels may not have been properly secured, and it also recalled Model 3 vehicles in April because the bolts on the front suspension lateral link may fall loose over time.
