Automobile companies are launching new products to get a slice of the Indian market. One of the largest and the fastest-growing sectors, it is attracting attention from the biggest brands. Yesterday, Nissan launched the cheapest subcompact SUV Magnite to ignite its fortune in India. COVID-19 Pandemic had slowed the prospects of many automakers but going by the recent festive season things seem to be returning back on track. Atleast for now with some positive growth in stride, we take a look at 'Top 10 Best Selling Car Brands in India'.
Maruti Suzuki continues to enjoy a lion share of the sales in India. The homegrown manufacturer has sold over 1,35,700 units in the month of November 2020. This is a marginal drop in comparison to the sales figure of 1,63,656 vehicles in October 2020. The automaker has launched new models in the wake of emerging competition from new and established rivals. They brought new products like Vitara Brezza Facelift, Dzire Facelift, S-Cross to the Indian market this year. Showcased at Delhi Auto Expo in February 2020, the subcompact SUV Maruti Vitara Brezza was launched at a starting price of Rs 7.35 lakh (ex-showroom), India. Maruti Suzuki also launched the 2020 S-Cross BS6 petrol at price point of Rs 8.39 lakh (ex-showroom), India in the month of August 2020. With the move to stricter BS6 Emission Norms, Maruti Suzuki has discontinued diesel engines with only petrol powertrains available for Indian buyers.
Hyundai Motor India continues its rise in the domestic market with 48,800 units sale for the month of November. The South Korean automaker recently launched a slew of new products like Creta Facelift, New-Gen i20, Venue IMT, Tucson and Verna for its customers. Hyundai Creta Facelift was introduced at a price tag of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), India. Debut in 2015, it has been a tremendous success with over 4.5 lakh units sold so far. Also, Hyundai Venue BS6 was introduced at a price of 9.35 lakhs (ex-showroom). It comes with 3 engine options - 1.0-litre turbo and 1.2-litre kappa petrol units followed by a 1.2-litre diesel. While New-Gen Hyundai i20's launch price is Rs 6.79 lakhs (ex-showroom). The premium hatchback is very different from its predecessor in aspects of design, styling, features and engine options.
The home-grown manfacturer had a good November month with over 21,600 unit sales. When compared to the same period last year (November 2019), Tata Motors has had a year-on-year growth of 108 percent as against 10,400 vehicles sold. This is a good indicator of the homegrown manufacturer achieving an upward growth. Tata Motors over the last couple of months brought in new models like the Nexon Facelift, BS6 Harrier, Altroz and Nexon EV to the domestic market. Tata Nexon EV was launched at a starting price of Rs 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom), India. The electric SUV further established Tata's presence in the fast-growing EV segment in the country. Tata Altroz petrol price starts from Rs 5.44 lakh (ex-Showroom), while the diesel model retails at Rs 6.99 lakh onwards (Ex-Showroom), India. Tata Motors also brought in the Nexon Facelift at a price point of Rs 6.95 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes with an all-new front grille design, bi-arrow pattern replaces the earlier 7 tri-arrow layout in white colour.
Kia Motors India continues to drive home sales with an impressive 50.1 percent increase in sales. This is evident from numbers that the recently launched Kia Sonet has been able to garner for itself. The subcompact SUV registered a sale number of 21,022 units in the month of November 2020. In comparison to last month, the numbers have increased considerably as it recorded a sale of 11,417 units. Kia Sonet was launched earlier this year at a price of Rs 6.71 lakh (ex-showroom), India. Kia Sonet faces stiff competition from newly-launched Nissan Magnite, upcoming Renault Kiger, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Toyota Urban Cruiser in its segment. Kia's other two offerings in India are the Seltos and Carnival.
Mahindra & Mahindra has been in the news for the overwhelming response of its newly launched 2020 Thar. The automaker notched up sales of 18,212 units in the November month. The homegrown manufacturer also launched the BS6 Bolero, Alturas G4 and Marazzo this year. 2020 Mahindra Bolero Facelift BS6 price begins from Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom), India). It is the first vehicle in India to come with metallic bumpers. The brand got in the BS6 Alturas SUV at a starting price of Rs 28.69 lakhs (ex-showroom) while the Marazzo MPV was introduced at a price point of Rs 11.25 lakhs (ex-showroom), India.
Renault India closed last month at a sales figure of 10,181 units Earlier this year, the French automaker launched the BS6 complaint Duster Petrol at an introductory price of Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom), India. Also, the BS6 Triber AMT arrived in the country at a price point of Rs 6.18 lakh (ex-showroom), India. The popular Renault Kwid RXL 1.0 hatchback was also released into the market having a price of Rs 4.16 lakh (ex-showroom).
Honda Cars India showed good growth with the sales figure of 9,990 units in the country. This year, the Japanese automaker launched new models like the New-Gen City, Jazz facelift and WR-V facelift in the country. The company’s fortunes have been riding well on the back of New-Gen Honda City. The sedan is sold at a starting price of Rs 10.89 lakh (ex-showroom), India. Additionally, Honda Jazz Facelift was introduced at a price of Rs 7.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Honda's crossover WR-V made its way to the Indian market this year. It is available with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol model's price starts at Rs 8.69 lakh (ex-showroom) while the diesel unit retails at an introductory price of Rs 12.39 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Toyota has discontinued few models with its success dependent on Innova Crysta, Fortuner and newly-launched Urban Cruiser. The manufacturer recorded a sales of 8,500 units in November with expectations of more growth in the coming months due to the Toyota Innova Crysta Facelift whose bookings have just been opened. The company introduced Innova Crysta Facelift at a starting price of Rs 16.26 lakhs (ex-showroom), India. The Toyota Fortuner that is expected to get a facelift next year was launched in its BS6 avatar. Its petrol model retails at Rs 28.66 lakhs while the diesel model is available for Rs 30.67 lakhs. All prices mentioned here are (ex-showroom), Delhi. The Japanese automobile giant made an entry into the popular yet competitive subcompact SUV segment with the Urban Cruiser this year. Toyota Urban Cruiser is currently being sold at a starting price of Rs 8.40 lakh (ex-showroom), India.
MG Motor is cementing its position in the Indian market with the recent launch of new vehicles like the Hector Plus, Gloster and ZS EV. On the back of new models introduction, the automaker has notched up sales of 4,163 units in November. The electric SUV- MG ZS EV was launched at the starting of this year with a price tag of Rs 20.88 lakhs (ex-showroom), India. The iconic British brand also brought in the Gloster SUV at a starting price of Rs 28.8 lakhs (ex-showroom), India. The premuim-7 seater SUV competes against the likes of Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner in its segment.
Ford continues to make its presence felt with the Ecosport and Endeavour SUV's. The American automobile giant sold 3,991 vehicles in the month of November. Earlier this year, BS6 Ford Endeavour was launched at Rs 29.55 lakhs (ex-showroom), India. Ford and Mahindra have joined hands to create a joint venture in India. Under the new colloboration, both companies would jointly develop products and moreover Ford will be using Mahindra's production facilities in the future.
