The compact SUV segment has become fairly popular from the past few years in the Indian market. It had been raking in huge numbers for the automakers as far as sales is concerned. Even during the economic slowdown witnessed by the automotive industry last year in India, the SUV segment was least affected by it. So, in this piece, we will talk about the five most popular compact SUVs in India.
Kia Seltos is the most successful and popular SUV in the Indian market in the last six months or so. Being firstly launched in August 2019 in the country, Kia Seltos is priced in a range of Rs 9.89-17.34 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). Kia Motors India has sold over 81,784 units of the SUV till March 2020 since its launch which translates roughly into a monthly average of 10,000+ units. It has been the best-seller in the compact SUV segment for three months on a trot in the first quarter of 2020 with cumulative sales of 15,000, 14,024, and 7,466 units in the months of January, February and March, respectively.
Hyundai India introduced the new-gen Creta SUV on March 16, 2020 in the country with BS6 engines. The Creta has constantly featured in the list of top 10 cars in India with average monthly sales of nearly 8000 units since its launch in around five years back in July 2015. The company has sold a total of 4.50 Lakh units of the SUV till date in the domestic market and export. With the introduction of the new-gen SUV, it is expected to cover the lost ground with bumper sales once again. The new-gen Hyundai Creta is offered with lots of bells and whistles while a total of three engine options are available for the buyers.
Maruti Vitara Brezza has been the best-seller in the sub-compact SUV segment since its launch but the sales dwindled last year due to the arrival of Hyundai Venue. The company launched the facelifted version of the SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo with BS6 compliant petrol engine with manual and auto transmission while phasing out the diesel variants. The Vitara Brezza facelift is priced in a range of Rs 7.34-11.40 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi) while getting three new dual tone color options. It was also equipped with SHVS smart hybrid technology for improved mileage figures.
Hyundai Venue was launched last year in May but it was only last month when the company introduced the SUV with BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engines. The prices for the petrol variants start at Rs 6.70 Lakhs while the diesel range starts at Rs 8.10 Lakhs, recording a hike of Rs 20,000 and Rs 51,000 over the BS4 variants. The BS4 1.4L diesel engine was replace by the tried and trusted BS6 compliant 1.5L unit from the Creta and Seltos. One of the primary reasons for Venue to get an overwhelming response and edge over Vitara Brezza is the feature loaded cabin.
MG Motor India, the Indian arm of China-based SAIC, debuted with Hector mid-sized SUV in the country in June 2019. It was priced in a range of Rs 12.18-16.88 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, India) while getting a total of three engine options. MG Hector has maintained its sales figures since its launch and there was a time last year when the company had to actually stop the bookings temporarily due to excessive orders and prolonged delivery time. Even in March 2020 sales, it was the only SUV to register a positive sales growth. MG proudly calls it as India's first Internet SUV.
