Indian Army is by far the largest military force in the world. Ever since its inception, it has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with China. Indian Defense Forces including the mention of the Indian Army, Paramilitary Forces and Border Forces which are always omnipresent at our borders guarding us against the enemy. These forces need the best resources available at their disposal in order to protect our land from hostile forces who seek to wreak havoc on us. Working in some of the most inhospitable terrains be it the rugged Doklam or the Rann of Kutch, the forces have a clutch of vehicles to call upon. We are going to take a look at the various vehicles aiding the Indian Army and Paramilitary Forces as they safeguard our borders.
Tata Safari is one of the most iconic SUV to have emerged from Tata Motors. Currently discontinued, Tata Safari is now exclusively manufactured for the Indian Army. Tata Safari Storme comes with army specific features and it is often used by them at their bases. The SUV is painted in matte green army colour with elements like a jerry can holder above its rear fender, pintle hook at the rear, bonnet antenna and spotlight. If we talk about performance, Tata Safari Storme is powered by a 2.2 litre 16-Valve DOHC VTT diesel engine. It comes in two states of tunes, one churning out 150 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque while the other generates 154 bhp of maximum power output with 400 Nm of peak torque.
If anyone has watched movies based on the Indian army, one can spot the Maruti Gypsy being the commonly used vehicle. The movies can’t be far from the truth as Maruti Gypsy is still being used by the Indian Army in rugged terrains. A lightweight, off-roader vehicle, Maruti Gypsy has been in the service for the Indian army for decades now. Engine-wise, the Maruti Gypsy is powered by a 1.3-litre single cylinder petrol engine. The engine churns out 80 bhp of maximum power and 103 Nm of peak torque.
Mahindra Scorpio is loved by everyone, be it the civilians or the Indian Army. The New 2020 BS6 Mahindra Scorpio will be offered in 4 trims - S5, S7, S9, and S11. Mahindra Scorpio will be underpinned by a revamped ladder-frame chassis. The New BS6 Mahindra Scorpio is powered by a 2.2 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine churning out an impressive power output of 140bhp and peak torque of 320Nm. Nowadays, foreign law enforcement agencies are making a beeline for Mahindra Scorpio too.
Tata Sumo can seat up to 7 to 9 passengers at once with low maintenance being its biggest USP. Tata Sumo is primarily used by the Indian Army for transporting personals or being used by the Medical team as an ambulance. Tata Sumo is currently discontinued as it doesn’t get the BS6 engine update. Tata Sumo 4×4 was powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, naturally aspirated diesel engine. This engine offered 63 bhp of the maximum power and came mated to 5-speed manual gearbox.
The Ambassador was an automobile manufactured by Hindustan Motors India, in production from 1958 to 2014. Currently discontinued in India, it is still used by the high ranking Indian Army officers. The Hindustan Ambassador used to come with a variety of engine options in both petrol and diesel. If you see a red beacon on a Hindustan Ambassador passing with a convoy, you can safely assume the person sitting inside is an influential member of either the Indian Government or the Army.
The Mitsubishi Pajero is a full-size sport utility vehicle manufactured and marketed globally by Mitsubishi Motor Corporation. A powerful machine, the Pajero is helpful for the Defence Service in patrolling long and rugged terrains especially our borders. The SUV from the Japanese automaker is powered by a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine delivering 120 bhp of maximum power and 280 Nm of peak torque.
Toyota Fortuner looks like a giant on the road, it easily dwarfs the other cars due to its massive size. Customized Toyota Fortuner's are being currently used by the BSF and ITBP (Indian Tibetan Border Force) for patrolling rugged terrains like the Indo-China border. One interesting fact to note is that only these two paramilitary forces are allowed to use the Toyota Fortuner. The Toyota Fortuner generates 169 bhp of max power and 420 Nm of peak torque all due to the powerful 2987cc 6-cylinder diesel engine.
