Although Japanese maker Toyota’s Glanza is a rebadged version of the Maruti Baleno, the sales figures have been encouraging for the company. The Glanza has surpassed the market expectations and has gone on to sell 1,919 in the last month. This figure is higher than the sales numbers for Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz, two other vehicles from the same segment. The German maker’s hatch managed to bring in 1,450 units whereas the Honda car could only manage 680 units. However, this figure of Glanza is far lower when compared to segment leaders like Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20, the two cars managed to sell 13,689 units and 9,271 units respectively.
Coming back to the Glanza, it is placed as a premium hatchback in the company’s product line-up above the Liva hatchback that the company already sells in India. However, the Glanza is slightly higher priced than the Maruti Baleno in the Indian market as the Japanese carmaker is selling only the two top variants of the hatch in the market. Toyota sells the Glanza in two variants in the Indian market and these variants are G and V.
The Glanza is a petrol only car and is sold with the option of both automatic as well as manual gearboxes in the Indian market. The company sells the car with the K12B 1.2L petrol engine that is rated to produce 82 Bhp and 112 Nm and the smart hybrid 1.2L petrol engine rated for 90 Bhp and 113 Nm. The transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic gearbox, although the automatic variant will only be offered on the non-hybrid model. The mileage for the hybrid model stands at 23.87 km/l while the non-hybrid model will return a fuel efficiency of 21.01 km/l.
Toyota is not taking the mass market way with their upcoming Glanza and is positioning it as a more premium offering in the segment with the badge of Toyota also adding to the reliability of the product. The company offers a warranty of 3 years/1 lakh kms on the latest Toyota Glanza. The extended warranty program will take the period up to 5 years. As far as the changes on Glanza are concerned, they are minor and stylistic like changes on the grille and badging change. The interiors too are not that different from Maruti Baleno.
Talking of the two cars in the segment that the Glanza has managed to surpass, the Jazz is scheduled to be updated by the maker next year and Polo is also due for an update that will bring major changes to the German hatch.
