Toyota is one company severely affected by the Takata airbags disaster – the carmaker will be conducting a massive recall of 2.9 million cars globally.
Takata's airbags have been riddled with problems for the past decade, leading to grievous injury and even death. A total of 16 deaths have been reported in the US alone, although a much higher number is expected on a global scale. One of the biggest issues was that the airbag inflators, when exposed to heat, were prone to exploding immaturely shooting metal fragments onto the passengers and driver. The reason for this expulsion is thought to be prolonged exposure to light. For Takata, the repercussions have been heavy, as it pleaded guilty to charges of fraud in a US federal court and has agreed to cough up a lofty sum of $1 billion (approximately ₹6,673.5 crore) for the settlement.
According to Toyota, fixing this problem can take up to anywhere from 30 minutes and three hours at its local dealerships, depending on the type of cars being fixed.
