Toyota Kirloskar Motors is making its entry in the highly competitive subcompact SUV segment in the Indian market with the launch of Urban Cruiser. It is based on the highly popular Maruti Vitara Brezza and will go on sale by next month. In an image sourced by the online publication Autocar India, we can safely say that Toyota has tried to provide the Urban Cruiser its own identity. The bookings for sub-compact SUV will officially start from August 22, 2020. This is the second time Toyota India is developing a car based on a Maruti Suzuki model as the Glanza hatchback was based on Maruti Baleno. Toyota Urban Cruiser will compete against the likes of Maruti Vitara Breeza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport and upcoming Kia Sonet.
Toyota has attempted to give a rugged look to the SUV which is quite evident from the front fascia. The dual-slat front grille with angular chrome frame is quite similar to the Fortuner while the bumper comes with cuts and creases. The front bumper features a faux bull bar and metal finished faux skid plate. The Urban Cruiser is quite similar to the Vitara Brezza besides the front end.
If we talk about the interiors, Toyota Urban Cruiser styling is reportedly different from the Vitara Brezza. We can assume the company to go for light coloured materials and upholstery in the cabin. The Urban Cruiser interior cabin would be spacious but the features will closely resemble the Vitara Brezza. It will come with a SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment system which we have seen in all the Maruti Suzuki models as well as Glanza.
Toyota Urban cruiser will be offered with only a petrol engine and no diesel model will be introduced as has been the case with the new BS6 Maruti Vitara Brezza. The engine will belt out 105 bhp of power with the five-speed manual gearbox offered as standard with four-speed torque-converter automatic available as an option.
The Urban Cruiser launch will happen sometime in September 2020 in the Indian market while it will be developed alongside the Vitara Brezza by Maruti and then supplied to Toyota.
