The company revealed that it is working on a new five-seat variant of its Atlas SUV. At the 2018 New York motor show, the company showed its Cross Sport SUV Concept.
This concept previews an upcoming five-seat version of the Atlas as part of VW’s global SUV offensive initiated by the German car maker under the title “Moving Forward”. The car will be assembled at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant in Tennessee, and it will be sold as a rival to the more affordable version to BMW X6. It is built on the company’s MQB platform.
The new Cross Sport concept closely resembles the Atlas SUV but it features subtle styling changes. The bold grille features full width LED light bands and an illuminated badge that double up as daytime running lamps to help accentuate its width. At the back, the Cross Sport has a more heavily plunging roofline than the existing Atlas SUV.
The rear gets a pair of high set LED tail lamps as well as a large tailgate. The concept also shows a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, which features a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that makes 272hp and 350Nm in combination with two electric motors.
