The World Car of the Year award was presented to Volvo for its XC60 at the ongoing New York motor show. This is the first time Volvo has won the award, and the SUV also was awarded the North American Utility of the Year Award earlier this year. Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, said, “I am pleased to see our company’s product investments paying off. We are up against some tough competition, but this award for the XC60 show that Volvo has the right combination of design, connectivity and safety that appeals to customers across the world.”

In India, the XC60 costs Rs 55.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and is sold in a single Inscription trim. Under the hood sits a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre diesel engine that makes 235hp and 480Nm. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic that powers all-four-wheels.

You also get a car loaded with kit – there’s air-suspension, a segment-first massage function for the front seats, and a variety of radar-based features such as blind spot assist, lane-keeping aid, autonomous braking, and adaptive cruise control.

Nissan's Leaf won the World Green Car, the Audi A8 claimed the World Luxury Car category, the Velar, won the World Car Design award, the BMW M5 was named World Performance Car and the Volkswagen Polo topped the Urban Car class.

“The New York International Auto Show is proud of the tradition it has built with the World Car Awards to recognise the 'best of the best' in the auto industry," said John LaSorsa, chairman of the New York motor show. "Over the past 12 years, this awards programme [WCOTY] has grown to become one of the most coveted honours for the world's auto makers."
