There could be issues with service and a significant drop in resale value.

Today, many Chevrolet owners will feel like they've been deserted after GM suddenly decided to wrap up its domestic operations. Though the company has promised to continue aftersales support, this decision will impact current Chevy owners. Here’s what you need to know.

Aftersales support for your Chevrolet
The carmaker’s sales outlets will shut down by December 2017, but Chevrolet has promised to maintain a service network across key locations. The company has not specified where these locations will be yet. Existing dealers may continue their service centres because of the money they’ve invested, while others may shut shop. This could mean a significantly reduced presence of workshops and longer commutes for when your car needs to be serviced.

Servicing your Chevrolet
GM will continue to manufacture cars in India and has promised to continue providing spare parts support. However, when a car reaches the end of its lifecycle, it isn’t certain whether the company will stock parts for these older cars. There’s no information on whether Chevrolet will provide spare parts in the long run for vehicles that were not manufactured in India, like the Trailblazer or the Captiva. On the plus side, GM has committed to honour all warranty, extended warranty and service package agreements.

Selling your Chevrolet
A brand shutting shop is never good news for the resale value. Chevrolet cars never commanded high resale prices, and GM’s pull-out will see them drop even further.

Buying a new Chevrolet
You can expect it to rain discounts as dealers liquidate stocks and clear their inventories. Some brave buyers will consider availing these discounts, but future aftersales support, spares and resale value will be a concern.
