Yamaha Motor India to start offering ABS ahead of the safety norms taking place in India.

After the Government made ABS mandatory for motorcycles with engine capacity over 125cc, most of the manufacturers in the country are launching their products with ABS gradually. The new mandate will come in to effect starting from April, 2019. Yamaha is the latest to join the party, with the R15 V3 and the FZ slated to receive ABS updates. The bookings for the ABS-equipped motorcycles will begin by 15th January, 2019.

Yamaha hasn't stated about other motorcycles in its >125cc segment like the SZ receiving ABS as of now. However, commuter products like the Saluto and the Saluto 110 were recently launched with the addition of UBS as a linkage braking system is about to become mandatory for two-wheelers above 110cc.

Currently, only the Yamaha R3 is the non-CBU motorcycle from the company's portfolio to offer ABS. Deliveries would begin about a month after booking the motorcycles, however, dealers won't be accepting bookings for the ABS-equipped versions until their current stock is cleared up. This could translate into a longer waiting period for customers who want the ABS equipped motorcycles.

Yamaha is expected to offer cost-effective single-channel ABS on both the FZ and the R15 V3. Expect to pay a premium of around Rs. 8000 - Rs. 12,000/- for the ABS update on the respective motorcycles.
