McLaren has revealed the new 720 Spider that comes with a retractable hard top.

McLaren has given the 2019 720S a topless treatment by introducing a retractable hard top in the line up. While other design elements resemble its coupe counterpart, the A-pillar looks different as the 720S Spider accommodates the retractable single carbon fiber roof panel. McLaren claims the hard top is the fastest operating convertible roof in the super-car class, it can be raised or lowered in just 11 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/hr.

Customers can enhance their open air experience and get the optional electrochromic glass panel for the hard top that changes from transparent to tinted with the touch of a button. The glass panel will tint automatically when the engine is turned off. Interestingly, the removal of the roof didn't require any further strengthening for the car. The McLaren 720S Spider is based on an extremely lightweight carbon fiber structure that makes it extremely strong and rigid. However, McLaren has added fixed carbon fiber structural support for better rollover protection along with the extra strong A-pillars. The 720s Spider gets aerodynamic buttresses and an active rear spoiler. The car rides on 19-inch or 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels that come with either Pirelli P Zero or Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, depending on the buyer's selection.

The 2019 McLaren 720S Spider is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine which produces 710 HP of peak power and 769 Nm of peak torque. It is mated to a 7-speed sequential shift transmission that propels the car from 0-96 km/h in a breathtaking 2.8 seconds. 0-200 km/h comes up in just 7.9 seconds while the car can do a top speed of 341 km/h. However, with the roof lowered the top speed limits at 325 km/h. The 720S weighs 1332 kgs, just 49 kgs more than the coupe.

The car is available to order and deliveries are to begin in March 2019. Prices start at $315,000 in the United States, £237,000 in the United Kingdom and €273,000 in Germany.
