2020 Mahindra Thar's popularity is surging with each passing day and it is evident from the fact that its bookings are over flowing. Adding a new feather to the cap is being awarded a 4-star crash rating by Global NCAP. The autonomous organization based out of USA regularly audits various cars in the emerging market in regards to adult and child occupant protection in event of a crash. All-New Mahindra Thar received a highest-ever rating for a body-on-frame SUV ever tested by Global NCAP so far. Also, the popular off-roader scored the second-highest point in child safety of all the vehicles ever tested by the organization. The test was conducted in Germany recently with the model being the 2020 Mahindra Thar in a right-hand drive version. The SUV received 4 stars overall instead of a 5-star rating as it did not reach the required points in the frontal impact test. Next-Gen Mahindra Thar is available in two variants namely AX and LX. The former retails at an introductory price of Rs 9.80 lakhs (ex-showroom) while the latter costs Rs 12.49 lakhs (ex-showroom), India.

“The All-New Thar is designed keeping the safety of our customers as the top-most priority, including Adult & Child safety. In fact, the entire safety simulation and development of the All-New Thar was done at Mahindra Research Valley, Chennai. I am sure that this recognition will further make it a popular choice amongst our consumers”, commented Velusamy R, Chief of Global Product Development, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd on receiving the recognition.

Talking about the rating in detail, the report indicated that the driver and co-passenger heads and neck protection are good in event of a crash. Further, the front row occupants chest gets adequate protection. The SUV structure on the overall was rated as stable but the footwell area was found to be unstable by the safety rating organization. On the whole, the 4-star rating for adult protection is expected considering Mahindra’s other model XUV 300 is rated as the safest SUV  in India.  As for child occupancy safety, the vehicle comes equiped with point belts in all seating positions and offers ISOFIX anchorages.

New Thar has certainly been improved over its predecessor in terms of design, styling, safety features and performance. If we speak about safety equipment on-board the popular SUV, then there are dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability programme (ESP), hill hold & descent control among others. Futhermore, it comes fitted with two engine options that include a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol and a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel CRDi unit. The petrol model delivers a maximum power output of 150 bhp with 350 Nm of peak torque while the diesel engine produces 130 bhp of power output and 320 Nm of torque.
