The 2020 new-gen Honda City is all set to go on sale from next month, i.e. July 2020, in the Indian market after a delay of nearly three months due to COVID-19 pandemic. The series production of the new sedan has commenced at the company's Greater Noida facility in Uttar Pradesh while it can be pre-booked either online by paying Rs 5,000 upfront or at a Honda authorized dealership by depositing a token amount of Rs 21,000. The fifth-gen Honda City will replace the current model which was launched in India nearly three years back in 2017. Let's figure out what the new 2020 City brings to the table as compared to its predecessor in terms of styling, features, space and engine options.
The 2020 new-gen Honda City is longer and wider than the present version of sedan. It has grown up in size considerably well, compared to the ongoing model as it is longer 149mm and wider by 53mm. However, the new sedan is shorter in height by 6mm from the current-gen model. The wheelbase of both the iterations is identical and it appears shocking because since Honda has increased the length by quite a decent margin, the wheelbase must have also witnessed an increase for enhanced space and comfort of the occupants, especially the legroom for rear seat passengers.
If the ongoing Honda City appears sporty and bold in appearance to you, then the new-gen model takes a major overhaul in terms of designing. The company designers have tried to make it classy and elegant while toning down the sportiness quotient. Taking cues from Honda's flagship model, the Accord, the 2020 new-gen Honda City now flaunts a thinner front grille with chrome treatment. It gets wraparound LED headlamps while riding on the same size of alloy wheels as the ongoing model, albeit a slightly different design. The rear end boasts of a Z-shaped 3D tail-lamp cluster which compliments the overall look of the sedan. Overall, the new City is sophisticated and trailblazing, which most of the people like it to be.
The present model of Honda City featured a non-uniform and asymmetrical dashboard design and several owners had a reservation regarding it. But, with the new-gen City sedan, it has gone for a toss and the company has introduced a more conventional and traditional dashboard. The cabin is finished in a dual-tone leather upholstery while the quality is as premium as one desires in a sedan attracting a price tag of Rs 10 Lakhs. The bigger change comes in the form of manual dials and switches for the air conditioner in place of touch panel buttons. The instrument cluster is also redesigned with MID in between. The rear seats get a centre armrest with three adjustable headrests.
As for features, the 2020 new-gen Honda City gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. The Japanese automaker calls it India's first connected car as it debuts Alexa remote function. In addition, the next generation Honda Connect with Telematics Control Unit (TCU) comes with 32 new features. Most of the features are carried over from the current model, albeit with a few updates.
Safety & Security:
The 2020 new-gen Honda City has received the highest 5-Star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP. It comes equipped with several first-in-segment safety features, which were missing from the current model, in the form of Agile Handling Assist (AHA), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Honda LaneWatch Camera. The company has retained most of the features from the current model such as 6 Airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), ISOFIX compatible Rear Side Seats with Lower Anchorages, Multi-angle Rear Camera etc. to name a few.
The 2020 new-gen Honda City (petrol) is more powerful than the current model while at the same time, delivering higher mileage. Both the petrol and diesel engines are BS6 compliant units. The diesel unit in question here is the refined version of the ongoing 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine which sees no changes in power output and torque performance as it continues to develop 98bhp at 3600rpm and 200Nm at 1750rpm while offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. The ARAI certified mileage stands at 24.1kmpl.
