It will rival the likes of Chevrolet Tahoe, Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Palisade and Jeep Grand Commander in China

New spy shots of Ford Equator have surfaced on the internet in an online Chinese news publication. The biggest takeaway is the similarity of the dashboard with the upcoming Mahindra XUV500. Equator SUV is being developed jointly between Ford and China-based Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC). The 7-seater SUV will be positioned above the Everest in the Chinese automotive market. Ford Equator will compete against Chevrolet Tahoe, Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Palisade and Jeep Grand Commander in China. Expectations of its arrival in the domestic market are slim considering the cost factor as well as the Indian consumers' rising preference towards subcompact SUV's.

The spy images offer an insight into the upcoming SUV’s design. At the front, one can spot a huge grille flanked by vertically split headlamps. The top-end section features LED DRL's and turn indicators while the lower-end comes with LED projector lights positioned just above the silver-finished bumper. Overall, the SUV comes in a boxy silhouette typically like the Endeavour model selling in India. At the rear, the vehicle sports a single-piece LED taillight design and a silver colour finished bumper. There is a lot of silver influence on the door cladding as well as on roof rails. The spied model was riding on monotone alloy wheels but expect top-end trims to come with dual-tone alloy wheels. Equator is a large SUV considering the reported size is 4905 mm in length.

The interior details could be gleaned from these spy shots. One can look forward to a fully digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Like the upcoming Mahindra XUV500, there is a dual-tone interior colour scheme. Upping the premium feel is the presence of leather and wood inserts inside the cabin.

Talking about the powertrains, 2021 Ford Equator will house a 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine under the hood. It will be delivering a power output of 221 bhp. Transmission options available will include a manual and an automatic gearbox. As it would be sitting above Everest SUV, one can look forward to both 2WD (Two-Wheel-Drive) and AWD (All-Wheel-Drive) options.
