Tata Motors will be introducing a new turbo petrol engine and DCT gearbox on its premium hatchback, Altroz.
Tata Motors India is planning to equip its premium hatchback - the Altroz with a new turbo petrol engine and a DCT gearbox option. The company will be announcing its price in 2021. Once launched, it is likely to compete with the likes of the recently launched Hyundai i20 1.0 DCT, VW Polo 1.0 TSI, and CVT variants of the Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza, and Honda Jazz.
Talking about the DCT equipped Altroz automatic, it will draw power from a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that will generate 109 bhp power. The engine will make its debut soon. Also, the DCT gearbox on-board will be a Schaeffler-sourced 7-speed automatic unit. As for the gear-shifter, it will come from Lumax. The Altroz currently on sale does not come with an automatic transmission.
Tata Motors was earlier planning to source a 7-speed DT-1 dual-clutch transmission from Belgian manufacturer - Punch. However, the homegrown automaker has changed its plan and according to a media report opted for a wet-clutch unit from German component supplier Schaeffler. The reason behind this was that Tata wanted its premium hatch to provide better performance. Talking about the dry-clutch units, they are known to suffer from glitches in typical Indian driving conditions. However, there is no such information as to if Tata has compared the performance of both these transmission types in actual Indian conditions or not.
Coming back to the DCT version of the Altroz, it will be around 22 kgs heavier than the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol version of the car. With additional power and torque paired with a quick-shifting DCT, Tata Altroz automatic is likely to give an amazing performance. We can expect the DCT variant of Altroz to get the same suspension setup as the regular model. In terms of design, there will be no changes in the vehicle. Since it will be introduced as a new top-spec variant, we can expect the hatch to come equipped with features available on the current top-end Altroz XZ trim.
