The luxury car marque has announced that it is going to launch at least six electric cars by 2028, and they will be built on the EV-only Neue Klasse platform. The German automaker has constructed this electric vehicle platform specifically for its upcoming electric models. According to reports, the auto giant is currently working on a compact EV, which will be a next-generation iX1 based on the Neue Klasse architecture.

The outgoing BMW iX1 electric model is manufactured on the UKL2 platform. This same architecture also forms the standard for the ICE-powered X1, which comes in diesel, petrol, and plug-in hybrid trims. The next-generation BMW iX1 electric car is anticipated to be the last one of the six electric models scheduled to be unveiled by 2028.

BMW has set a target for the year 2026; the manufacturer is hoping that one-third of complete global sales will come from selling electric vehicles. If things work out for the brand, then 33 percent of its total sales are anticipated to come from EVs. To reach this goal, the automaker is spending a significant amount on the production of new electric vehicles.

By 2026, the luxury carmaker is hoping EVs will be as profitable as vehicles powered by the internal combustion engine (ICE). Electric vehicles are mostly more expensive than ICE models due to elements like battery sets and advanced electric control units. However, within the last two years, the company has been attempting to turn a profit in the electric vehicle market.

The CEO of BMW, Oliver Zipse, has stated that the electric vehicles built on the all-new Neue Klasse platform will be more affordable to manufacture. The Neue Klasse platform will prove beneficial for BMW's future EV lineup.
