BMW's India plant, located in Chennai, just completed 10 years since production began. The plant started operations on March 29th, 2017 and since then has gone on to increase the number of its locally produced car models to eight. Presently, the BMW 1-series, the BMW 3-series, the BMW 3-series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5-series, the BMW 7-Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5 are locally produced at BMW Plant Chennai.
The massive efforts behind this success were recognised by Vikram Pawah, president, BMW Group India who said, “It is a day of great pride for all of us at BMW Group to celebrate the 10th anniversary of BMW Plant Chennai. The precision in quality achievements perfectly complements the advanced technology in the cars and the multiple facets of the luxury brand. In the years to come, BMW Plant Chennai will play a crucial role in fostering BMW Group's ambitions in India.” The plant has locally assembled over 57,000 cars till date and is capable of producing up to eight car models in its two assembly lines.
As part of its Make In India initiative, the plant now works on 50 percent locally produced resources. Dr Jochen Stallkamp, managing director, BMW Plant Chennai, said, “I congratulate the team for producing cars with more than 50 percent localised content and achieving the high international quality standards as any of the BMW production facilities globally. Highly qualified employees, remarkably refined systems and the most modern technology ensure that our production quality creates new benchmark in manufacturing of luxury cars in India.”
BMW Plant Chennai is located in Mahindra World City and employs more than 500 highly qualified employees.
