Necessity is the mother of invention. This proverb seems apt for Partha Saha, 39, from Agartala. Partha built a motorbike with a one-metre gap between the rider and the passenger. He built the bike all by himself to drive home the message of social distancing in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic. The Indian government and the World Health Organization (WHO) are emphasizing on the importance of maintaining social distance to stop the transmission of this deadly virus.

Saha, a school drop-out, made the interesting innovation on his own. He brought an old bike from a scrap dealer and removed the engine. He cut the bike in half and rod measuring more than a meter to connect the wheels.
Saha plans to use the bike to ferry his daughter to school once the lockdown ends. He doesn’t want his 8-year-old daughter to take the crowded school bus once the schools start post the lifting of nationwide restrictions. Partha works at a TV repair shop and hence, he used his meagre saving to build the bike. The bike is powered by a battery and can clock a top speed of 40 kmph. Saha while talking to AFP said the bike takes 3 hours to charge and the bike can go upto 80 kilometres on a single charge. Cost of charging comes to just 10 rupees making it a value-for-money product.
The bike was tested on the roads of Tripura leaving the people amazed and even drew the attention of the Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb as he took to twitter to appreciate the innovation of Saha.
“Necessity is the mother of invention! I congratulate Partha Saha of Tripura for making a unique motorcycle to create awareness during COVID-19 pandemic”- Biplab tweeted.
India has been hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic with over 37,336 confirmed cases with the death toll of 1218. Nationwide Lockdown has been extended till 17th May in wake of the increase in the cases.
