Delhi government excluded electric and battery-operated vehicles from the registration fee in the national capital
In a major boost to the EV industry, the Delhi government today exempted electric and battery-operated vehicles from registration fee in the national capital. The breaking decision was announced by Kailash Gahlot, Delhi Transport minister. A few days back, the Delhi government had also removed road tax on all the EVs or battery-operated vehicles under its new Electric Vehicle Policy. As per the official notification, the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi waived the current tax levied upon all-battery electric vehicles with immediate effect. This isn’t the first state government to make decisions specific to electric vehicles as the Telangana govt had also introduced an EV specific policy in August earlier this year.
Delhi's new Electric Vehicle policy made its way in August 2020 to increase the adoption of EVs in the national capital. The policy talked about tax waivers, EV infrastructure creation and a proper system to dispose or reuse the EV’s batteries. The Delhi government has also laid out an ambitious plan of setting up 100 electric vehicle charging stations in the city in the coming year.
Incentivizing is the key to drive the Indian consumers towards the EV fold and the policy has been framed keeping in mind exactly the same vision. Goods carriers, Two & three-wheelers and personal EVs are part of the policy incentives. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government announced incentives to the tune of Rs 1.50 Lakhs for electric cars and Rs 30,000 for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and freight vehicles. This is all a part of the push to make EVs 25 percent of the total vehicle registrations in 2024. The decisions taken in the past few months has made Delhi the cheapest place to buy an EV in the country. Delhi Chief Minister heralded the decision and said “another crucial step towards ensuring a pollution-free Delhi”.
On Twitter, Delhi Transport minister Kailash Gahlot said,” Congrats again, Delhi! Next in the list of breakthrough incentives promised by CM Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi govt exempts the Registration fee on Battery Operated Vehicles. Delhi leads again, the EV way!”.
