Delhi to Re-Instate Odd-Even Scheme from November 13

The Delhi government will reinstitute the odd-even scheme from November 13 with the goal of reducing the increasing pollution in the capital. The scheme will be in effect for five days, from 8 am to 8 pm.

The Delhi government first initiated the scheme back in January and April 2016. Under this rule, Vehicles with number plates ending in odd numbers can run on odd-numbered days, and those with even numbers can commute only on even-numbered days.

Exempted from the rule are two-wheelers, women-only vehicles, CNG-powered vehicles, hybrid and electric vehicles, and emergency vehicles. The scheme doesn’t apply to top-tier politicians' cars either.

Delhi has recorded an all-time high as far as pollution is concerned. Heavy smog has covered large sections of the city, and this is also affecting air and ground traffic. Schools are now shut for the rest of the week and the government has advised people to stay indoors.

The country’s National Green Tribunal has called for a ban on construction and industrial activities in the city and has also asked for a ban on the entry of trucks into Delhi.
