ESC And Autonomous Emergency Braking To Become Mandatory In India

The Indian government has been taking huge steps in terms of road safety amendments.

With anti-lock braking system (ABS), airbags and rear parking sensors becoming standard on every car manufactured in 2019, the Indian government is taking huge steps in terms of road safety. Moreover, the government is planning to mandate Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) in all cars in 2022.

There is no Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP) in India but the government in association with vehicle manufacturers is trying to implement many safety features in the upcoming vehicles. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) will be incorporated in the vehicles between 2022 and 2023.

While cornering, the ESC controls the vehicle in case of oversteer or understeer, when there is a loss of traction on slippery surfaces, the ESC stabilizes the car by braking individual wheels. Whereas, the AEB uses the information from radars and cameras to apply the brakes automatically if it detects a menacing collision.

The AEB will be mandatory in European countries in 2021 and the USA in 2022. So, to make India at par with international road safety norms these ESC and AED features are going to be mandatory by 2023. The inclusion of these technologies will make the cars slightly expensive but the cost will be a mere sum when compared with the value of human life.
