The first collaborative bike launch is delayed till 2023

Bajaj Auto had announced a collaboration with Triumph Motorcycles back in 2017. It was a long-term, non-equity driven partnership to develop mid-capacity motorcycles for the Indian market. The plan was to launch the first motorcycle by 2021 but it has hit a snag. In an interview with ET Auto, Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto spoke about the delay in the production of the motorcycle. He revealed that the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic has pushed the production schedule by several months. Possibly, expect the first collaborative bike to arrive by either the latter half of 2022 or first quarter of 2023. The Indian motorcycle giant is keeping its cards close to their chest by not divulging any information about the motorcycles to be produced under the partnership.

According to Rajiv Bajaj, the motorcycles will be manufactured at the upcoming Chakan production facility. As per various media reports, Bajaj Auto has invested over Rs 650 crores in this manufacturing facility. It intends to develop KTM, Husqvarna and Triumph motorcycles in the same plant. The upcoming motorcycles will carry the Triumph name, but marketing and sales will be handled by Bajaj. The partnership will be quite similar to what Bajaj is having with KTM currently. The homegrown manufacturer will take responsibility just not for the domestic market but will be exporting to other countries as well.

The first product to roll out of the collaboration would be a 200cc motorcycle. It will be priced below Rs 2 lakh and will compete against the likes of Royal Enfield Meteor 350, Honda H’ness CB 350 and Jawa Classic 350. Expect the bike to come in a retro design taking inspiration from the Triumph Bonneville. Details regarding the engine are mostly speculative with many media reports hinting at a 200cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled unit. The bike will feature a round headlamp, single-piece seat and twin disc brakes. Also, expect the retro-styled bike to get dual-channel ABS.

The aim of the partnership is to bring Triumph bikes at a lower price point to the domestic market. It is a win-win deal for both Triumph and Bajaj as the recent collaboration between the foreign premium brands and Indian manufacturers have been quite successful. If we take the example of recent associations like TVS-BMW, Bajaj with KTM and Husquarna, they have been quite successful in the country.
