Mercedes-AMG is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will commemorate this with the launch of a slew of products and concepts.
The first among these will be the GT4, a 600 bhp plus, 4-door concept said to be the brainchild of AMG boss Tobias Moers. This 4-seater sports sedan is a replacement for the CLS Shooting Brake, and will hit international markets in 2018. It will compete with Porsche’s Panamera, the BMW 6 series Coupé and Audi A7/RS7. The car will be built on Merc’s lightweight, modular underpinnings that makes extensive use of aluminium, and will be powered by the latest iteration of AMG’s twin-turbocharged 4.0 litre V8. This enigne will also feature in the new E63 sedan.
This high-tech motor is equipped with fuel-saving engine start/stop tech, and also comes with an integrated starter motor (ISG) which will provide momentary bursts of added performance.
The gearbox will be AMG’s latest Speedshift MCT (multi-clutch transmission) automatic which will send power to all four wheels via Merc’s 4Matic four-wheel drive system. Lower variants are also expected to make up the variant line-up.
The GT4 will become AMG’s third dedicated series production model line, following the SLS and the existing GT. It will also unveil its limited volume F1-inspired hypercar, currently known as Project One later this year.
