The SUV will go on sale in 2019.

The H5X SUV concept was shown at the 2018 Auto Expo 2018 and test mules of the production version have now been spotted across the country.

This car will be the first of the Tatas to use the company’s Impact Design 2.0 design language. Styling will be bold, and the car could feature slim headlights, high-set LED tail-lamps and a floating roof. There will be five-seat and seven-seat versions. Spy shots reveal a smart steering, a touchscreen infotainment atop a dual-tone dashboard and even memory function for the front seats.

The H5X will be built on the Land Rover Discovery Sport's platform (codenamed L550) and will have a similar floor pan, steering gear, and an all-independent suspension. The engine will be sourced from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and it will be a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine, called the MultiJet II. This engine also powers the Jeep Compass. Spy shots show a manual gearbox but a ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic transmission is coming. The company has made a new four-wheel-drive system for the model and it will offer different drive modes.

The production-spec H5X will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta at the lower end, while its higher-spec seven-seat versions will take on the Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass.
