The C-segment sedan is at present the most hotly contested car segment in India. Such is the rivalry among car in this segment that it did not yield to a single car as a clear sales leader last month. The presence of major brands means that there is always a close fight among top three rivals for the number one spot in sales. These three rivals are usually Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. This month, Honda has managed the top spot with City followed closely on its heels by the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Hyundai Verna. Even though Honda City has been the best-selling C-segment sedan in June, the difference in the top three cars was next to nothing.
Talking about numbers, Honda sold 2,461 City sedans in June, earning it the top spot in the segment. Second in the list is Maruti Suzuki that sold 2,322 units of Ciaz during the same duration. The third spot has been taken by Hyundai that sold 2,271 units of the Verna sedan last month. As we had said, the difference in sales number between the top two cars is just 139 cars while only 61 cars separate the brands at the second and third spot. These numbers are enough to know the kind of competition the cars in these segments are facing.
What remains constant though is the slowdown in automobile industry across segments. If we compare the June 2019 numbers to the same period in 2018, we see that there is a big drop in the units sold. This is another proof of the recent market slowdown that has forced several major manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra to shut production for a few days. The Ciaz is the only car that recorded greater sales this year compared to the sales in the same month last year. However, the reason for this is the fact that Maruti had not launched the updated version of the Ciaz in June 2018.
Coming back to Honda City, the car is still a popular choice in the segment despite nearing the end of its life cycle. Honda is now working on the new generation model of the car that will be rolled out in 2929. At present, the car is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol version is powered by a 1.5-liter engine that generates 117 Bhp power and 145 Nm torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual and CVT automatic gearboxes. The diesel variant also gets a 1.5-litre motor that puts out 98.6 Bhp power and 200 Nm torque and gets a 6-speed manual gearbox.
