It was after ages that no Maruti grabbed the top-selling vehicle spot in monthly sales in India.

The automobiles sales across the country commenced from May 2, 2020 after the Union Government decided to restart the economic activities by re-opening the dealerships and service centres. The companies had registered zero sales in the month of April due to the nationwide lockdown because of COVID-19 pandemic. In the May 2020 sales, the best-seller passenger vehicle in India was Hyundai Creta with 3212 units. It was after ages that no Maruti grabbed the top-selling spot as we are habitual of seeing an Alto, Swift or DZire as the country's top most car in terms of sales.

Vehicle

Units Sold

Hyundai Creta

3212

Maruti Ertiga

2353

Maruti DZire

2215

Mahindra Bolero

1715

Maruti Eeco

1617

The second position indeed had a Maruti in the form of Ertiga MPV with 2353 units followed by the DZire sedan at third with 2215 units in the month of May. The fourth position was secured by the rural warhorse Mahindra Bolero with sales figures of 1715 units. The fifth spot was captured by Eeco mini-van with 1617 units. The omission of Maruti Alto and Maruti Swift was too surprising as they had been ruling the roost for decades in the Indian market. In fact, the disappearance of Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Seltos too raised eyebrows as they have been raking in decent numbers each month. But we can see all the aforementioned vehicles making a comeback in the near future as production has restarted with more than half of the workers at certain manufacturing units.

Hyundai Creta

Speaking of 2020 Hyundai Creta BS6, it has already clocked 24,000+ bookings since its launch on March 16, 2020 in the Indian market. The diesel variants received over 55 percent of the total bookings which is quite astounding, given the fact that several companies are phasing out diesel engines after BS6 emission norms and focusing on petrol or hybrid models. Recently, Hyundai Creta's arch rival Kia Seltos was reintroduced with more features while the pricing was also increased to accommodate the new bells and whistles. Besides Seltos, the Creta also rivals the likes of MG Hector, Nissan Kicks, Tata Harrier and Jeep Compass in the Indian market. Stay tuned for more sales updates!
