Hyundai Will Make 16 New Engines and 6 New Gearboxes by 2022

The carmaker revealed its next-gen global powertrain strategy in Korea recently.

The company has revealed its future powertrain development strategy in Korea at the International Powertrain Conference. The event saw over 1,200 engineers and academics from leading drivetrain makers with the theme ‘Knock the Limit of Powertrain Technologies: To Enhance Value for Customers’.

Hyundai showcased four engines and two transmissions that will form its new ‘Smart Stream’ powertrains, which incorporates a lot of tech, especially to cut long-term emission. The new engine and transmissions are expected to improve the current line-ups fuel efficiency, and at the same time, reducing exhaust emissions.

The company’s global model range will soon be fitted with the new Smart Stream 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines. This process will progress alongside the development of new plug-in hybrid and electric drivetrains, including Hyundai’s next-gen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV).
