JLR to use three architectures - two for Land Rover and a pure-BEV platform for Jaguar

The British automaker owned by Tata Group, Jaguar Land Rover, recently made a big announcement that it will become a fully-electric luxury car brand by 2025. Besides this, Land Rover intends to launch six electric cars by 2025 with the first one due in 2024. This move from the British automaker does not come as a surprise. It is basically a part of the new Reimagine strategy wherein the company aims to achieve a zero-emission target by 2039 and zero tailpipes emission by 2036. In order to fulfill this commitment, JLR will switch from nine vehicle platforms to just three - two for Land Rover and a new pure-BEV platform exclusively for Jaguar.

All the Land Rover models in the future will be built on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), which further allows for combustion engines and EV models. In addition, it will also use pure electric based Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) that will support advanced electrified ICE. Furthermore, all the Jaguar cars will be built on a pure electric architecture.

“The Reimagine strategy takes Jaguar Land Rover on a significant path of acceleration in harmony with the vision and sustainability priorities of the wider Tata Group. Together, we will help Jaguar realize its potential, reinforce Land Rover’s timeless appeal and collectively become a symbol of a truly responsible business for its customers, society and the planet,” as commented by N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, Tata Motors, and Jaguar Land Rover Automotive plc.

By 2030, there will be six all-electric Land Rovers within the existing Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender families. However, the Land Rover models will continue to be offered with a mixture of powertrains including the plug-in hybrids until 2036. Talking about Jaguar, it will sell only electric cars by 2025. At present, the only fully-electric car offered by JLR is Jaguar I-Pace. Talking about the existing Jaguar range, it includes the facelifted XE, XF, and F-Pace. But, we have no idea what impact this shift will have on them.
