The Kia EV9 achieved a remarkable double win at the 2024 World Car Awards. The automaker showcased the EV9 during the World Car Awards ceremony at the New York International Auto Show on March 27. The EV created headlines by winning both the prestigious titles of 2024 World Electric Vehicle and 2024 World Car of the Year.
The Kia EV9 competed with a total of 38 global contenders at the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), and it was joined by the BYD Seal and Volvo EX30 in the final three. The selection process included a jury of 100 eminent international automotive journalists from 29 countries who voted on each eligible vehicle based on their expert assessments.
This dual victory marks a significant milestone for Kia, as the company has now won five Awards in the 20-year history of the World Car Awards. In the World Electric Vehicle category, the EV faced off against the Volvo EX30 and BMW i5. For a vehicle to be eligible for this award, it must only be equipped with electric motors, have annual manufacturing volumes of more than 5,000 units, and be sold in at least two significant markets on two different continents.

On the other hand, to be eligible for the World Car of the Year title, a vehicle must be manufactured in volumes of at least 10,000 units annually, priced below the level of luxury cars in their primary markets, and offered in a minimum of two major markets across two continents within a given period. The World Car Awards were first held in 2003 and have since gained international recognition as the premier standard for automotive leadership and quality.
The President and CEO at Kia, Ho Sung Song, stated, “We are hugely honoured that the 2024 EV9 has been named the World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle. This triumph is a testament to our unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and design excellence. The Kia EV9’s continued success will drive us to keep delivering exceptional vehicles that redefine the driving experience for customers around the world.”
This is not the first time that the South Korean brand has bagged the World Car Awards. In 2023, the Kia EV6 GT swept the World Performance Car title, while the Soul EV and Kia Telluride won the same title in 2020. The recent victory of the EV6 reflects the success of vehicles that are based on the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform). The Kia EV6 GT and Hyundai Ioniq 6 are also based on the E-GM platform, and both cars have won several awards in the last few years.
