The RX450h is one of three models that Lexus will launch in India; it will be the only hybrid SUV in its segment.

Toyota’s luxury division ‘Lexus’ will start its India innings with three new models, the ES sedan, the RX SUV and the full-size LX SUV. The LX will appeal to those wanting a big luxury SUV, while the RX is likely to find takers in buyers looking for stylish SUV that also has some serious green creds.

It will take on the Mercedes GLC and the Audi Q5, and is the only model in its segment to offer a petrol hybrid powertrain. However, since it’s a CBU import, the model will be costlier than its immediate rivals. In addition to the hybrid model, Lexus is also likely to introduce a feistier F-Sport variant of the RX SUV.

The standard RX450h will get a 308hp petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, which is a combination of a 3.5-litre V6 and an electric motor. Power will be sent to all four wheels via a CVT automatic gearbox as standard. The F-Sport variant of the RX will use the same powertrain as the regular model. However, it will get performance parts like an adaptive suspension, active stabiliser bars and additional drive modes.

Expect the SUV to come loaded with features like a dual-zone climate control, electrically adjustable seats with heating and ventilation functions, full-LED headlamps, reverse camera, sunroof, park assist, and a touchscreen infotainment system and 18-inch alloy wheels. Safety kit on board includes as many as 10 airbags and vehicle stability control program. The F-Sport will additionally get a sportier body kit.

While prices of the RX will be higher than its rivals since it’s a full import, Lexus has plans to locally assemble its models in India at a later stage, which should drive prices down.
