Mahindra & Mahindra recently launched the all-new Thar in the domestic market. The bookings for the SUV has already commenced from October 2, 2020. Apart from this, the company has also initiated test drives for the Thar in a phased-out manner. Currently, the test drives have started in a total of 18 cities. Despite this, the SUV has managed to cross 9000 bookings since the launch. Also, it has received over 36000 inquiries and more than 3.30 Lakhs website visitors. Furthermore, the company is planning to add 100 more cities in phase-2 of the test drive from 10th October onwards. The rest of the cities will be eligible for the same from 15th October 2020. As for the deliveries, they will begin November 1, 2020 onwards.
The all-new Thar has been launched in a price range of Rs 9.80-12.95 Lakhs (ex-showroom). The company has launched the SUV in two trims - AX and LX. The AX variant is targetted at the adventure seekers while the LX variant is oriented more towards the urbane residents. In terms of design, the next-generation Thar carries forward the legacy from its predecessor. The SUV is completely based on a new ladder frame chassis. This helps to improve the overall driving dynamics without compromising the off-road capabilities. It also gets both soft-roof and hard-roof configuration. The SUV gets an updated cabin with a plethora of features. It is offered both in a six-seater and a four-seater layout.
“We are extremely happy with the overwhelming response and excitement that the All-New Thar has created. What is also encouraging is that the All-New Thar has resonated well with lifestyle seekers, families & women buyers, thereby opening up an entirely new set of customers for this iconic lifestyle 4X4 SUV. Despite test drives being available in just 18 cities, to begin with, we have received over 9,000 bookings for the All-New Thar, since its launch, which is unprecedented for this segment. Our endeavor is to ensure that test-drive vehicles are available in the rest of the country at the earliest, for more people to experience and book the All-New Thar,” as commented by Veejay Nakra, Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
Under the hood, the Thar gets both petrol and diesel options. The petrol variants draw the power from a 2.0-litre mStallion engine that generates a maximum power of 150 bhp @ 5000 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm between 1250 - 3000 rpm. The automatic variants of LX range churns out a peak torque of 320 Nm between 1500 - 3000 rpm. The diesel variants are powered by a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder, mHawk unit that develops a maximum power of 130 bhp @ 3750 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm between 1600 - 2800 rpm. Now both of these engines get 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission options. The lower AX variant gets the manual gearbox only. While the top-end LX variant also gets a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
