The 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine will be sourced from the global-spec Maruti Swift

Maruti Suzuki Jimny has never ceased to grab headlines ever since its India premiere at the 2020 Auto Expo in February. The latest word is that the 5-door version will be powered by a 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine, which will be sourced from the global-spec Maruti Swift. It is expected to have a grand world premiere by the end of 2021 or early 2022. It has been learnt that Maruti Jimny 5-door will be launched in the Indian market by July 2022. To be sold via the NEXA channel of premium dealerships, it could have a starting price of Rs 10 Lakhs.

First things first, Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door will be a sub 4-m product as it will measure 3850mm in length. The width and height will stand at 1645mm and 1730mm, respectively. If we talk about wheelbase and ground clearance, they will be 2550mm and 210mm. The company has increased the length and wheelbase by 300mm each as compared to the 3-door version of the Jimny. As for styling, it will get a few subtle updates like a revamped front grille with a single slat in place of the five-slat vertical unit. This change will be applicable on the facelifted version of the upcoming 3-door Jimny. The 5-door model will weigh 1190 kgs which is nearly 100 kgs more than the 3-door version.

Coming to the 1.4L turbocharged petrol motor, it is presently offered as ICE only motor. However, it will be coupled with a mild hybrid system for the Jimny. The power output and torque performance figures for this engine with the Swift are 127bhp and 235Nm, respectively. Looking at the numbers, it could do justice to the Jimny which will be less than 4 metres in length. The logic behind introducing a mild hybrid system is increase in fuel economy. The 3-door Maruti Jimny is powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated powerplant which churns out 101bhp and 130Nm. In all likelihood, the India-spec Maruti Jimny 5-door will receive the 1.5L engine as it is locally developed in India.
