Maruti XL5 is the premium version of Wagon R which is expected to arrive in India by the end of 2020.

Maruti Suzuki has been working on a new model, codenamed XL5, for a long time now. The XL5 has been spotted multiple times testing on the Indian roads. It is essentially a premium version of the popular hatchback Wagon R. The car was scheduled to go into production by now but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the plans of Maruti Suzuki. The XL5 was again spotted testing under heavy camouflage on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The testing was captured on video by Abhinav Bhatt for his Youtube channel. The video is helpful in understanding the various changes Maruti Suzuki has brought in the XL5. The Maruti Suzuki will sell XL5 exclusively through the premium Nexa dealerships.

The alloy wheels in XL5 come from the Maruti Suzuki while dimension wise, it is quite similar to the WagonR. The premium hatch will come equipped with a split headlamp setup, modified air dam on the front bumper and fog lamps at both rear and front. These small changes alongside a new sleek front grille make XL5 look slightly different from the Wagon R. It comes with 15-inch alloy wheels but the overall silhouette will remind the Indian consumers of the Wagon R. Maruti Suzuki XL5 rear is different from Wagon R due to the presence of vertically arranged taillights and modified bumpers.

We can expect the Maruti Suzuki XL5 interior to sport same design and layout as the Wagon R. Features wise, it will come with an auto climate AC unit, Multi-Function steering wheel, Semi-Digital MID, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

If we talk about the performance of XL5, the hatchback will be powered by a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine. The same engine powers other models in Maruti like Swift, Dzire and WagonR. The engine will deliver 82 bhp of maximum power and 113 Nm of peak torque. The engine will come mated to a 5-speed manual as well as AMT gearbox. If we talk about the expected pricing, the XL5 is to be priced higher than the 2020 Wagon R. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R base variant price is Rs 4.46 Lakhs with the top-end variant costing Rs 5.95 Lakhs. All the prices are Ex-Showroom, India. Maruti XL5 should arrive in the Indian Market before the end of 2020.
