Maruti Suzuki starts working on petrol variant of Vitara Brezza.

Ever since being launched in 2016, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has long since been a bestseller for the brand. The sub-4 meter compact SUV from the largest automaker in India has also topped the sales charts in the SUV segment. The average sales for the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza are nearly 14,000 units per month. The recent launches in the segment have tried to dent the sales of the sub-4 meter compact SUV, but have had to remain content with the distant second spot. However, the segment is getting more competitive by the day, with the Mahindra launching their XUV300 a few months back and the South Korean maker Hyundai gearing up to launch the Venue sub-4 meter compact SUV. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza currently locks horns with Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, and Mahindra TUV300 in the Indian market.

However, lately the Indian brand had been concerned with the lack of options for the Vitara Brezza. The petrol model of the Vitara Brezza has been an option that a lot of customers have been looking for.  All the rivals of the Vitara Brezza offer a petrol option in their line-up. This has been a sore point for the brand since long. However, now there are reports that the largest car maker of India will address this issue and has started work on bringing out a petrol model of the Vitara Brezza. The petrol engine is likely to be the 1.5 liter petrol engine that made its debut with the Ciaz sedan last year and is currently found both on the Ciaz and the Ertiga MPV. There are also talks of an automatic transmission being offered on the petrol variant of Vitara Brezza, however, the new petrol powered Vitara Brezza will only come with a manual transmission initially. In the future, the brand may equip the sub-4 meter compact SUV’s petrol engine with the same automatic transmission that is currently seen on the Ciaz and Ertiga petrol models. This transmission is a 4-speed torque converter unit.

The 1.5 liter petrol engine on the Maruti Ciaz sedan comes in the 1.3 Bhp and 138 Nm state of tune, and the petrol engine also comes with the brand’s own Smart Hybrid system (SHVS) mild-hybrid system. However, when the petrol engine will be brought to the Vitara Brezza, we may get to see a change in the state of tune of the engine. As far as the mild-hybrid system is concerned, the same is expected to make an appearance with the petrol engine on the Vitara Brezza as we have already seen spyshots that hinted at Hyundai equipping their upcoming Venue with a mild-hybrid system. The largest Indian maker could just bring the mild-hybrid setup with the petrol engine so as to properly challenge the upcoming Hyundai Venue.
