Maruti Suzuki will manufacture its first electric vehicle for Toyota in India, with production starting in 2025 at its Gujarat plant.

The Indian division of Suzuki is ready to deliver its first EV to Toyota Motor as part of its global partnership. This partnership will see the development of a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) SUV model. Maruti Suzuki, majorly owned by Suzuki Motor, will assemble the new electric vehicle at its Gujarat facility in the spring of 2025.

Suzuki and Toyota jointly said that this is the first project both companies are undertaking focused on manufacturing EVs, and they both earlier only focused on developing internal combustion fuel vehicles. The new EV will be produced at the Gujarat factory of Maruti Suzuki, which is a wholly-owned Indian carmaker operating under the Suzuki Motor Corporation.

The new EV, designed as an SUV, has a large capacity 60-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It is still unclear what features this new model will receive, but it will become part of a broad plan to release ten electric cars by 2026. Production of this EV will take place only at the brand’s facility in Gujarat, and there are no intentions of production at other sites.

Toyota has also claimed that it sold slightly more than 108,000 battery-powered electric vehicles globally for the first nine months of the year, which accounted for 1.5 percent of its global sales, which includes the luxury division of Toyota’s Lexus brand.

To boost the production capacity, Maruti Suzuki plans to have four production lines at the Gujarat plant specific to the EV segment and have a production capacity of 250000 units per annum. The company had earlier expressed its intentions of launching the newly developed EV in global markets such as Japan and Europe, which will reaffirm its goal to diversify its electric vehicles.
