India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki recently launched the model update for the tall-boy hatchback WagonR in the Indian market and it has been a hit among the customers in India. The latest generation model of WagonR uses the lightweight HEARTECT platform of the maker and has also grown in size as compared to the older generation model of the hatchback. Now there are reports on the internet stating that the maker will soon launch the larger 7-seater version of the tall-boy hatchback Maruti Suzuki WagonR in the Indian market. The larger version will obviously come with a stretched wheelbase so as to accommodate the extra seats in the cabin of WagonR.
The reports state that the upcoming 7 seater version of the WagonR could make its way into the Indian market sooner rather than later and the company has almost completed all the work on the same. The same report also states that the longer version of the tall-boy hatchback will be sold via the premium NEXA chain of dealerships by the brand. Speculation regarding the new and longer version of WagonR has been on for some time now, however nothing definite has come to the fore so far. The new generation WagonR’s higher price tag and larger size may have been a deterrent for the sales of the hatch and now the company is gearing up to introduce an all-new larger version of WagonR in order to boost the sales of the WagonR line-up in the Indian market.
The new version of WagonR will not only be larger but it will also carry MPV-ish looks, something that we have already seen on the Datsun GO+ in the Indian market. The 7-seater version will also be launched for a completely different customer segment and considering its price tag, it will rub shoulders with some other cars on the Maruti Suzuki model line-up. The speculation of the larger WagonR being sold through NEXA dealership also may prove to be true as the company is also gearing up to launch a 6-seater Ertiga in the Indian market that will be a more premium offering with captain seats in the mid-row and the same will be sold through NEXA dealerships. However, concrete news about both the upcoming vehicles remains scarce as of now.
As far as the mechanicals of the upcoming larger WagonR are concerned, it will likely be powered by the 1.2L engine that is available with the WagonR already and produces an output of 82 Bhp-113 Nm. The transmission options are also expected to remain the same. The new version will also come badged with a prefix to distinguish it from the normal WagonR in the market. The upcoming 7-seater WagonR will lock horns with Datsun GO+ and upcoming Renault Triber in the Indian market.
