Company hints at introducing the A1 if government relaxes import norms for luxury cars.

The Mini-rivalling small car, the A1, could be coming to India. Head of Audi's India operations, Rahil Ansari, hinted that if the government relaxes import norms for Luxury Cars, then the company will consider getting the A1 here.

The government is currently working out whether allowing foreign carmakers to import vehicles without having them undergo homologation would be possible, provided they have been certified by international testing agencies.

The move will see automakers have the ability to import a quota of 2,500 units per annum. Ansari said, "It is a favourable development and we hope it is passed soon because it will also allow us to give customers the choice of a wider variety of cars."

If the recently revealed second-generation A1 comes to India, it will be serious competition for carmakers like Mini.
