Honda Cars India will not discontinue the older model despite launching the new-gen City sedan.

The new-gen Honda City was originally scheduled to debut on March 16, 2020 in the Indian market. But, it was deferred indefinitely due to the ongoing Corona virus ourbreak in the country. Now, we have learnt that the new-gen sedan will be sold alongside the current-gen sedan in India, which suggests that the Japanese automaker might not discontinue the previous-generation model. The company might make the older model exclusive to fleet owners while the new model could be reserved only for personal buyers.

It is being further learnt that Honda might do a Toyota in the case of City sedan, i.e. the company might add a suffix in the name of new Honda City sedan just like Toyota did with the Innova. For those confused, Toyota introduced the new-gen Innova MPV as Innova 'Crysta' while continuing to sell the older model as Innova to taxi and fleet owners. The company retails the sedan as 'City Turbo' in Thailand but it unlikely to christen it as the same in India since it is not powered by a turbocharged petrol engine in the country. However, it is also being speculated that Honda, taking a leaf out of Maruti's book, might alter the name of older version of City. For those asking, Maruti adds the 'Tour' suffix to the older versions of its vehicles.

The next-gen 2020 Honda City BS6 price is expected to start at Rs 11.30 Lakhs while going as high as Rs 17.30 Lakhs for the range-topping model. It will witness a hike of Rs 40,000-50,000 over the ongoing model which comes with BS4 engines. The Japanese autogiant is also expected to drop the prices of current model of City significantly. Contrary to its earlier plans of only retaining the base models, the company has now decided to maintain the entire variant line-up of the older sedan for sale to fleet owners.
