New generation BMW X5 launched in India.

BMW has launched the fourth generation model of their X5 luxury SUV in India. The price for the new model of the BMW X5 begins from Rs. 72.9 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi and tops out at Rs. 82.4 lakhs for the top model. The BMW X5 will lock horns with the likes of Volvo XC90, Mercedes Benz GLE and the Audi Q7 SUVs in the Indian market. The company will assemble the SUV in India as it will be brought via the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kit route. However, the BMW X5 only comes with 5 seats and not 7 seats like the Audi Q7. The new model of BMW X5 has grown in size overall as compared to the last generation of the SUV and this gives the new model of the SUV a more planted, squat stance.

The new model of the BMW X5 is actually lighter than before because the German maker has decided to use a lot of high tensile steel and aluminum in the new model of BMW X5. The BMW X5 now is based on the CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform of the company that is also found on other models of the company like the 5-Series, 7-Series, and the larger X7. Talking of the increase in the size of the new model of the SUV the new model of BMW X5 is 36mm longer, 66mm wider, 19mm taller and has a wheelbase larger by 42mm when compared to the last generation model. This puts the measurement of the new model of BMW X5 at 4,922 x 2,004 x 1,745 (L-W-H) and the wheelbase at 2,975 mm.

Talking of the design of the new model of the X5 one finds that the exterior design has been overhauled to a large extent. The front as well as rear bumpers are new units and the LED headlamps have shrunk in size whereas the front also sports a larger grille. The rear of the SUV now houses new LED tail lamps and the sides feature new design alloy wheels. Stepping inside the cabin one finds a minimal design theme. The new model of BMW X5 will be sold in 3 trims -- 30d Sport, 30d XLine and 40 MSport. The company has started taking the bookings for all variants and deliveries will follow shortly.

Coming to the under the hood department of the SUV, the diesel variants come with the 3L straight-6 twin turbo unit that is rated to deliver 262 Bhp and 620 Nm. On the other hand, the petrol variant comes with 3L staright-6 unit with twin turbochargers and is rated to deliver 340 Bhp and 450 Nm. The transmission duties are handled by a ZF sourced 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Apart from the 8 speed gearbox, all the variants of the X5 also come with rear wheel biased xDrive all wheel drive system as standard.

Moving on the features on offer in the SUV, there are two large 12.3-inch screens that act as instrument cluster and infotainment units and BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional display is standard on the SUV. Other features on the SUV include a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with massage seats, panoramic sunroof among others. On  the safety front the new model of X5 comes with 7 airbags, ABS, traction control, ESP, hill hold, hill descent control, cruise control, multiple drive modes and more.
