Next MG SUVs in India

After becoming center of attraction following the launch of Hector SUV in India, MG Motors has now gone back to the drawing board to expand market share and build brand image in the country. The company is working on three new SUVs in India and a possible fourth non-SUV model is also on the cards. According to a news report, MG India President Rajeev Chaba has said that the company hopes to gain traction in market as it launches new models in the country while also expanding retail presence. At present, MG has 120 touchpoints across the country and is working on increasing that count to 250 by the end of 2019.

The first among the new vehicles by the British origin-Chinese owned brand will be eZS EV. The Indian car enthusiasts will get a first look of the car during the festive season with the launch at the start of 2020. It will be priced around Rs. 15 lakhs to Rs. 20 lakhs and will sit below the upcoming Hyundai Kona EV. This car is already in sale in the international market and that version is powered by a 110kW electric motor that offers 150 PS maximum power and 350 Nm peak torque. This electric SUV can reach 50 km/h in 3.1 seconds and offers a range of 350 km. Like Hector, eZS will also feature several segment-first features such as 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and embedded eSIM among others.

Next in the order will be seven-seater version of Hector. Both these vehicles will be available for sale before April 2020 i.e. before the implementation of BS-VI emission norms. The 7-seater Hector will take on the upcoming Tata Cassini, which is the 7-seater version of the Harrier and is expected to hit the roads by the end of 2019. The 7-seater Hector will be the same car with same engine-gearbox options and kit level. The only difference will be an added row of seats at the rear and lesser boot space.

The third offering of MG will be a compact SUV that will sit below the Hector. It might not directly challenge the Hyundai Creta but will be priced a bit lower than the Korean SUV. In recent years, the compact SUV segment has emerged as the most profitable sector and hence MG also plans to make a foray with its all-new vehicle. Last in the line is the hatchback that could be launched by 2022. However, nothing has yet been confirmed about this hatchback and could also be shelved if the market conditions are not found to be appropriate. What we can confirm is that the brand will launch three new SUVs in the coming time, which includes the eZS, 7-seater Hector, and a Hyundai Creta rival.
