Nissan Magnite was awarded a 2-star safety rating in child occupant protection

Nissan Magnite has scored an impressive 4-star rating in the safety tests conducted by Global NCAP. The sub-compact SUV was tested in its most basic safety spec fitted with two front airbags and ABS. During the assessment, it showed a stable structure and marginal protection to the driver’s chest. Nissan Magnite was awarded a 2-star safety rating in child occupant protection by the apex body for testing cars. Besides the Magnite, Global NCAP also tested Renault Kiger, Honda Jazz and the 4th-gen Honda City.

Nissan Magnite is equipped with a lap-belt in the rear centre seat instead of three point belts. Also, it doesn't get ISOFIX anchorages for the Child Restraint Systems (CRS). It misses out on Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as well. The assessment report further added that no side head impact protection is offered as standard in the Magnite. Though the protection offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. The driver’s and left passenger’s knees showed marginal protection as they could impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the Tranfascia tube. The passenger’s right knee showed good protection. The driver’s and passenger’s tibias showed adequate protection.

Overall, the bodyshell and footwell area were rated as stable. Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) system is standard on all the variants of the Magnite. Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia project currently tests frontal crash protection for occupants only. Side impact, ESC and pedestrian protection assessments will form part of Global NCAP’s updated assessment protocols in India as from July 2022. David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation said, “We warmly welcome the Indian government's proposal to require six airbags in new cars. Together with the introduction of our new assessment protocols in July this year, the combination of regulatory push and market pull will continue to help shape a market for safety in India.”
