The state of California in the United States has begun testing digital number plates.

To make the process of registering and re-registering cars easier, the state has decided to go digital. Priced around $699 (approx. Rs 47,000), the digital license plates can show custom messages, advertisements and traffic information, only when the car is parked however.

An additional monthly fee of roughly $7 (Rs 472) must be paid as well. It is basically a simple tablet with a built-in battery and tracker. It can register trip data, log traffic conditions and help track stolen vehicles.

In India, the government has mandated that all vehicles made on or after January 1, 2019 be fitted with High Security Registration Plates (HSRP). Existing models can be retro-fitted with the HSRP.
