The demand for Hyundai's subcompact SUV, the Exter, has been nothing short of remarkable. Impressively, the sunroof-equipped variants have captured the attention of nearly 75 percent of potential buyers, highlighting the growing preference for this luxurious feature. Furthermore, the allure of the Exter's automatic transmission (AMT) variants has also made a significant impact, accounting for more than a third of the overall bookings.

Hyundai's Exter has witnessed a remarkable surge in bookings, marking a significant milestone in its journey. Prior to July 10, the Exter had already amassed an impressive 10,000 bookings, and within just one month of its introduction, this number skyrocketed to over 50,000. Notably, a substantial 75 percent of these bookings have been made for the variants featuring a sunroof. The sunroof, available in the SX, SX(O), and SX(O) Connect variants, boasts voice activation technology for added convenience.

The distribution of bookings presents an interesting breakdown as well. The 5-speed AMT variants account for 33 percent of bookings. These variants of the Exter also come equipped with paddle shifters, known for their swift and responsive handling, as highlighted in our review. Worth noting is that the AMT option is solely offered for the petrol variants and is not extended to the CNG option. With the exception of the EX variant, all other iterations come with the choice of the 5-speed AMT.

Delving into the Exter's specifications, the sub-compact SUV is powered by the 1.2-litre Kappa engine, familiar from other Hyundai models like the Nios, i20, and Venue. This engine boasts a power output of 83hp and 114Nm in petrol mode, while the CNG models experience a slight reduction in power, generating 69hp and 95.2Nm.

Despite its compact size, Hyundai has laden the Exter with a host of features to keep it competitive within its segment. Notable features include an in-built dashcam, automatic projector headlamps, keyless entry and start, an 8-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, and integrated navigation. The Exter also ensures safety is paramount, offering six airbags, ESC, hill assist control, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and camera, and three-point seatbelts across all seats. It's worth mentioning that the Exter is yet to undergo crash testing.

In terms of pricing, the Exter falls within the range of Rs 6 lakh to 10 lakh (ex-showroom). Within this price bracket, it faces competition from contenders such as the Tata Punch, Citroen C3, and Maruti Suzuki Ignis. Interestingly, Tata has already responded to the Exter's entry by introducing a CNG powertrain and sunroof option for the Punch, strengthening the competition within this segment since the Exter's launch.
