Renault Kiger has been teased for the first time as it will globally be revealed on January 28, 2021. The subcompact SUV concept model was unveiled in November 2020 and now the production-spec model has been teased. Renault seeks to make its presence felt in the lucrative and crowded subcompact SUV segment in India. Kiger will rival the likes of Nissan Magnite, Kia Sonet, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon in its segment. Once launched, it will be sold alongside two other Renault products namely Duster and Triber in the country. Based on the CMFA+ platform which also underpins Nissan Magnite, Kiger's development is a result of a collaboration between the French automakers Corporate design teams in India and France. Expect the introductory price to start from Rs 5 lakh (ex-showroom), which will undercut its rivals. Renault Kiger SUV will be a Made-In-India product, as it will be manufactured at Renault-Nissan Alliance's production facility in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu.
The teaser reveals design elements of the upcoming Kiger like split LED headlamps with sleeker LED DRLS and a roof-mounted spoiler. Also, the front grille is different from the other Renault models currently on sale in the country. The model is expected to come equipped with a tow-slat grille with the Renault logo positioned right in the center. The French automaker had already said that the production-spec Kiger will be 80 percent the same as the concept model unveiled in 2020. So, do expect the design and styling to be quite different from the concept showcased earlier.
Talking about the interior, nothing has been disclosed by the manufacturer. We can expect the subcompact SUV to get features like the steering wheel, digital instrument cluster and glovebox, to be carried forward from the Renault Triber. Other equipment list onboard is likely to include a steering with mounted controls, infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, keyless control, among many others.
Renault Kiger would come equipped with two petrol engine options - a 1.0-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated unit and 1.0-litre turbocharged mill. The latter is the same that powers the newly launched Nissan Magnite. Thus, the turbocharged unit would deliver 99 bhp of maximum power output and 160 Nm of peak torque. There would be two transmission options namely manual and an advanced CVT gearbox.
