Around 2020-2021, Renault India is planning to introduce the Zoe EV to India. The concept will be exhibited at the upcoming Auto Expo 2020 in Noida in February to assess market interest. The car is currently being tested and modified to suit our conditions (especially our climate) with Renault also testing the range locally.
For example, one of the changes being made is to the underside of the battery where additional protection could be given from physical damage. Taking into account the combination of our unregulated speed-breaker sizes and our inclination to overload vehicles, this additional protection is considered essential.
At the Alliance plant in Chennai, the first cars to go on sale are likely to be partially assembled in India and are expected to be powered by a 90hp electric motor and a 41kWh battery. A sprightly performance is expected (despite the kerb weight of about 1.5 tons) and the Zoe might have a real-world range of about 300-350 km.
Nevertheless, the EV is likely to be a bit expensive at around Rs 14-16 lakh. Expect space levels of i20; indoor quality will be comparable as well. Still, this car could be just what's needed for those who want a powerful electric runabout for the area.
At the upcoming Auto Expo, the company will also be exhibiting several other models, including a Crossover prototype to showcase its potential sub-four-meter vehicle to compete with EcoSport and Nexon.
