Renault Reveals Retro-Inspired R5 Electric Model at Geneva Motor Show

The automaker is aiming to grow its electric vehicle sales by bringing back its classic 1972 model.

Renault has revealed its long-awaited R5 electric car at the Geneva Motor Show. The R5 E-Tech is based on the original Super 5 and R5, which were famous Renault models in the 1970s and 1980s. Both the Super 5 and the R5 crossed the nine million sales milestone between 1972 and 1996. The new R5 E-Tech comes with iconic design elements like vertical taillights and vibrant colors. The automaker is aiming to grow its electric vehicle sales by bringing back its classic 1972 model.

The base version of the new model is priced at around 25,000 euros (approximately INR 22.50 lakh). The company announced that the first variant of the electric car will be launched in the second half of this year. The Renault R5 E-Tech is likely to have a range of 400 km.

The new EV will feature bidirectional charging, enabling owners to resell the energy from their batteries to the power grid. The R5 also supports vehicle-to-load charging. According to the auto giant, the R5 E-Tech boasts 326 litres of cargo area, and it weighs less than 1,500 kilos. It has a flat floorbed and a longer wheelbase of 2,540 mm. The EV has a towing capacity of 500 kg.

The company is looking to strengthen its position in the modern EV market by unveiling the R5 E-Tech as a capable and modern electric car. The new model is likely to change the EV game in Europe. The CEO at Renault Group, Luca de Meo, said, “Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a car unlike any other. Its release coincides with a major shift by millions of Europeans towards a new mobility which is electric, connected, and sustainable. To develop this car in just three years in France, to the highest technological standard, all our decisions had to be disruptive, and our organisation as agile as possible."
