The car will go on sale in 2020 and will be a first for the brand.

The two-door, drop-top SUV will be built at the Osnabrück plant, which also oversees part-production of the Porsche Cayenne and Cayman, the Skoda Fabia and the VW Tiguan, before the model is finished in Wolfsburg. The factory can make at least 20,000 T-Roc convertibles per year.

VW is increasing its focus on SUVs, it intends to launch 20 of them before 2020. The company wants to move away from its traditionally rational approach. The dramatically-styled Arteon is testament to the carmaker’s attempts. The T-Roc cabriolet, when launched, will be the brand’s first drop-top SUV.

"Volkswagen is evolving into an SUV brand," Said VW brand boss, Herbert Diess. "The T-Roc is already setting new standards in the compact SUV segment. With the cabriolet based on the T-Roc, we will be adding a highly emotional model to the range.”
