“Skoda Kushaq is a 5-star NCAP rated compact SUV considered as one of the safest cars.” You might have heard this quite commonly and to your shock it is true. With the same buzz of Kushaq and Slavia in the market, CEO Klaus Zellmar is planning to scale up new launches in the Indian market. He is planning to strengthen Skoda Auto’s a.k.a Skoda’s position with skyrocketing profits.
The Czech automaker is in charge of spearheading the Volkswagen Group strategy in India, one of the top three markets for Skoda Auto. Skoda Auto is now considering stepping up its presence in both the domestic and export markets and intends to invest in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) after experiencing some success under the India 2.O strategy, which entailed unveiling made in India models with high localization levels, he said.
After seeing unbeatable record-sales of Kushaq and Slavia, he aims to surge Skoda’s presence across the country even more. The domestic sales of Skoda Auto during this fiscal year demonstrate the necessity for additional action. According to information from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the company's domestic sales dropped to 20,036 units in the first five months of the fiscal year from 24,448 units a year earlier.
During this time, sales in the larger passenger vehicle market climbed by 8.5% to 1.6 million units from 1.4 million. The company's full-year sales in 2022–23 jumped to a record 52,269 units from 34,004 units in the year before because of the newly released models under India 2.O.
Skoda Auto intends to significantly strengthen its lineup in India as it builds on its initial success. "We are taking a look at segments below the Slavia (a mid-size sedan that competes with cars like the Honda City and Hyundai Verna) and upwards to see if it can be profitable in the Indian market in order to diversify our product options. The choice has not yet been decided, said Zellmer.
The Enyaq iV, a 5-seater electric sport utility car (SUV), will be the company's entry into the BEV segment, where it currently has no presence, in the second half of 2024. It will be brought in and offered in modest quantities, but it will enable the company "test the water" for upcoming EV products in India. The Elroq is probably going to come after it the following year. In 2024, the Elroq will be introduced in Europe. can also determine whether that will work well for India," added Zellmer.
According to Klaus, an entry-level BEV that will likely cost 25,000 euros is also in the works and might be explored for the Indian market. This vehicle will likely make a worldwide appearance in 2025. He said that the company had enough automobiles in the works to boost its market share and turn a profit in India. By 2026, the business hopes to introduce 6 BEVs across the globe.
Skoda wants to increase exports using the current models. Serving Vietnam will be a key component of the export plan, among other markets. Next year, the company will begin exporting to Vietnam, with annual exports perhaps ranging from 35,000 to 40,000, which would more than double the number of 35,000 cars it exported from India in 2022.
