The electric two-seater has a claimed range of over 300km and level 5 autonomous driving.

The Frankfurt motor show saw the debut of Smart’s Vision EQ Fortwo. The main feature of the new concept car is that it features an advanced level 5 autonomous driving system. Smart suggests that its integration of swarm intelligence will make upcoming models and car-sharing fleets more convenient by better anticipating the predictability of demand.

On the inside, the autonomous Vision EQ Fortwo features a simple cabin without a steering wheel, pedals or traditional controls. Most functions are controlled via voice control or a smartphone. The two passengers sit on a relaxed-style seat featuring a retractable centre armrest.

Smart boss Annette Winkler stated that the technology showcased in the self-driving two-seater is being considered for the manufacturer’s future city car models and will play an important role in the parent company Mercedes-Benz’s Car2Go car-sharing programme by 2030.

While talking about the Vision EQ’s performance, she said the Vision EQ Fortwo features a rear-mounted electric motor and 30kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a range of “well over 300km”. Level 5 autonomous driving is so advanced that the Smart is envisaged to make its way by itself to the charging station. Furthermore, the battery can be charged through inductive means, without the need to plug it in.
